Meet the Director--Helen Henderson
With an English father and an American mother who met while studying in Paris before World War II, Helen moved to Kensington, Maryland at age 5. She was educated at Kensington Elementary School, Beauvoir, National Cathedral School, Kensington Junior High, and Einstein High School. In 1968, she went to the University of Kent at Canterbury in England, and graduated in 1971 with an honors degree in English and History. The following year, she got a Graduate Certificate in Education from the University of London, England.
Returning to the US in 1981 with her husband, Ian, and two children, she taught 5th and 6th grade for two years at Holy Redeemer School in Kensington. Having had twins in 1984, she became interested in teaching preschool as a way of working with children yet having time for her own children, too. This led to teaching preschool at, and then becoming Director of, Chevy Chase Methodist Preschool. Five years as Director of Chevy Chase Baptist Church Children's Center followed in 1993, and in 1998, she became Director of First Baptist Church Children's Center near Dupont Circle. In 2004, seeking a shorter commute, she became Director of Montgomery Child Care Park Street.
Helen enjoys reading, movies, and spending time with her family and friends.
Meet the Assistant Director--Jo Farrell
Jo started working for MCCA in 1979 at our Bel Pre location as a Teacher Assistant. After taking the 64 Hour Pre-School Course, she became a Senior Staff Teacher. In 1987, Jo moved to MCCA Park Street where she worked with the infants and toddlers for 17 years. During that time, she also completed the 45 Hour Infant/Toddler Course. Jo was promoted to Assistant Director in August of 2004. She also occasionally teaches workshops for MCCA’s Training Institute.
Jo’s favorite pastime is playing with her dogs and taking them on long walks. She also loves watching football with her husband and their friends every week during the fall and winter.
